Caption: This is George Kennan. He was a U.S. diplomat in Moscow from 1946 - 1948. In two profoundly influential writings, "the Long Telegram" and the "X" article he argued that the U.S. would defeat communism without firing a shot … the inherent flaws of communism would lead to its eventual destruction from within and we would prevail by virtue of the superiority of our system. A fervent anti-communist, he was the chief architect of the cold war's policy of containment followed by seven presidents. But, who gets all the credit for defeating communism?
