Viewable Date: 2012-03-20 Pub. Date: 2012-03-20
Image Number: 77216
Caption: What are you doing, Opal? I'm experimenting with nontraditional artwork. I'm taking dust bunnies from under the furniture and sculpting them into actual dust bunnies. Uh huh. I see. And … You call that art? I'm an artist, so … It must be art!

Comic/Cartoon: The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee
Viewable Date: 2011-08-22 Pub. Date: 2011-08-22
Image Number: 64779
Caption: Ms. Fletcher, I hear the term "starving artist" used all the time. Yet I've never once heard of a "starving chemical engineer" or "starving particle physicist." Frankly, it's why I don’t want to be an artist. Please, Edison, just finish your painting. I feel the pangs of hunger setting in already.

Cartoonist(s): Alex Hallatt
Comic/Cartoon: Arctic Circle
Viewable Date: 2011-07-10 Pub. Date: 2011-07-10
Image Number: 62585
Caption: Snowpeak's Sculpture by the Sea. I could do better than this. It looks deceptively simple, but this represents a complex relationship between the artist and his mother. Yes, and this one is about the struggle between the self and the web of our civilization. It is? What about this one - "Dolphin Dreams"? It's the abstract representation of the disconnect between the imagined dolphin psyche and reality. I preferred the original.

Cartoonist(s): Jim Toomey
Comic/Cartoon: Sherman's Lagoon
Viewable Date: 2011-03-23 Pub. Date: 2011-03-23
Image Number: 58767
Caption: Hawthorne, that fancy, high-priced modern painting you sold us is nothing but bird poop on a canvas! Interiors by Hawthorne. What is art? It's something that evokes emotion, is it not? Your strong emotions are merely proof that "bird poop on a canvas" is indeed art. How about "crab in a blender"? Art? Feel the emotion? I feel it.

Cartoonist(s): Jim Toomey
Comic/Cartoon: Sherman's Lagoon
Viewable Date: 2011-03-22 Pub. Date: 2011-03-22
Image Number: 58766
Caption: I saw the painting you put in Sherman's place. I want one! Interiors by Hawthorne. The drip-and-spatter technique is pure genius. Abstract expressionism at its best. I'll approach the artist and see if he's inspired to produce another. It doesn't help if you watch! Just make it happen.

Comic/Cartoon: Sherman's Lagoon
Viewable Date: 2011-03-21 Pub. Date: 2011-03-21
Image Number: 58765
Caption: As your interior designer, I'm recommending a big modern painting here. This artist is famous for his drips and spatters. It's yours for only $5,000. Okay. If you insist. They're very nice spatters. Obviously a professional. Sold another one of your paintings.

Comic/Cartoon: Sherman's Lagoon
Viewable Date: 2011-01-12 Pub. Date: 2011-01-12
Image Number: 56175
Caption: Okay, judging committee, which sculpture won. None of these. We're going with the one up on the beach. What one on the beach? It’s brilliant. So lifelike, you'd swear it was alive! Oh … Why is there a ribbon on my nose? Maybe you're accessorizing in your sleep.

Cartoonist(s): Jim Toomey
Comic/Cartoon: Sherman's Lagoon
Viewable Date: 2011-01-11 Pub. Date: 2011-01-11
Image Number: 56174
Caption: Nice to see you in the sculpture contest, Megan. You needed a female perspective. My sculpture makes a statement about women's rights, but it's subtle. You mean, you're not hitting people over the head with it … Actually, if you stand right here, it will hit you over the head, No thanks.

Caption: Thanks for coming to the unveiling of my sculpture, everyone, I'm confident my sculpture will win, and it will become a cultural centerpiece of our lagoon … Ladies and gentlemen, I give you … "Monolith For The Common Man." Should've called it "Port-o-Potty For The Common Man." Does it work? I gotta go.

Image Number: 55906
Caption: Here you go, boys. Invitations to the unveiling of my new sculpture. As the lagoon's most renowned artist, I realize everyone's waiting to see my entry. So I thought I'd make an event out of it. Really draw a crowd. You're the crowd? I was told there'd be shrimp.

Viewable Date: 2011-01-07 Pub. Date: 2011-01-07
Image Number: 55905
Caption: Hi. I'd like some grant money for a sculpture. You? Mayor. Yeah. Why not me? I dunno. I never figured you for an artsy, right-brained kind of guy. Do you think I'm driven more by my right brain or left brain? I'd say you're in neutral.

Comic/Cartoon: Sherman's Lagoon

Caption: I just heard the wonderful news! We got the grant money for the arts! Huh? Oh, yeah. Mayor. Here's some money. Go make a sculpture or something. The best artist wins a prize. Prize? Artists don't compete for prizes. Art is about the soul. Then gimme the money back. I'll squash the others like bugs.

Image Number: 55903
Caption: You look troubled, Hawthorne. Oh, the responsibilities of being mayor ... The lagoon was awarded a big grant for a public art project. Can't figure out how to scam it for yourself? I must be losing it if I can't cheat a bunch of artists.
